Trump Attorney Marc Kasowitz Makes Statement After Comey Senate Testimony

The revelation of the meeting would be the most tangible evidence yet of a connection between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, a subject that has also prompted an investigation by a federal special counsel.

The issue has become even more heated since emails released Tuesday showed that Donald Trump Jr, the president's eldest son, eagerly agreed a year ago to meet a woman he was told was a Russian Federation n government lawyer who might have damaging information about Hillary Clinton, the Democratic rival in the 2016 presidential election.

Kushner's foreign contacts have dogged him since the New York Times first reported in April that meetings with the Russian ambassador to the USA and the CEO of a Russian state-owned bank under us sanctions were among those omitted on his SF-86.

"I love it", Trump Jr. said in one email response.

Private conversations like that are deeply troubling to Trump's outside legal team, which is working overtime to minimize his exposure to the Russian Federation scandal, according to reports in the Times and Axios.

Meanwhile, federal investigators are reviewing Kushner's personal finances and Trump's abrupt firing of FBI director James Comey over the "Russia thing", which Kushner reportedly supported.

Futerfas told NBC that, "for the goal of security or otherwise, the names were reviewed" but said Trump Jr. knew nothing about the man's background at the time of the meeting.

"No deal has been reached, but talks have been productive and will continue", said AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan. We have an investigation here in the House.

For months, that's been the position of President Donald Trump and the White House.

Multiple changing explanations for the meeting attributed to Donald Trump Jr. made a complex set of events spiral.

Sekulow said the president was not being investigated by Mueller.

The Russia sanctions legislation was written as an amendment to a bill imposing new sanctions on Iran over issues including its ballistic missile program.

"Who do you have to protect?"

He continued, "I don't think it's illegal".

Kushner's lawyers were preparing documents to turn over to Senate Intelligence Committee investigators, and the email discovery created another problem for them.

"I've worked with colleagues over the years whose clearance was suspended or revoked for far smaller violations than leaving something of this effect off their SF-86", Derek Chollet, strategic planning director on Obama's National Security Council, told TPM, using shorthand for the Standard Form 86 security clearance application. At that time, in their second revision to the original form, the Kushner lawyers listed about 100 foreign contacts.

The scope of congressional investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential contest came into sharper focus on Wednesday as lawmakers said they meant to question the former chairman of the Trump campaign and to determine whether Russian social media "trolls" were connected to Trump's election efforts.

Democratic lawmakers and political observers on both sides of the aisle are questioning how Kushner can maintain the security clearance he needs to work on his overstuffed portfolio, or if he can even stay in the West Wing at all, given those reports. Trump Jr., in addition to being the president's son, was deeply involved in his presidential campaign. TPM's requests for comment to the White House press office were forwarded to Kushner's spokesperson, who did not respond.

A person close to Manafort said that he hasn't yet received a letter from the Senate Judiciary Committee about a possible interview.

The Republican president drew criticism last week from Democrats who accused him of not pressing Russian President Vladimir Putin hard enough at a meeting they held in Germany over Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 campaign. "There was zero coordination" between his campaign and Russian Federation", he told Reuters, adding: "It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard".

Axios writes that "the mechanics of the wall are unclear" and that Kushner hasn't yet agreed to the terms, meaning that this leak is nearly definitely an attempt by Kasowitz and company to apply public pressure on Jared and Boss Baby.

Trump told Reuters on Wednesday that he did not know about his son's meeting until recently.

A meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer in June 2016 was also attended by a Russian-American lobbyist who was a former Soviet counter-intelligence officer, NBC News reported on Friday.

Asked about the meeting Thursday, Trump said "politics is not the nicest business in the world" and that it's standard for candidates to welcome negative information about an opponent.

Eventually, Trump Jr. published the emails himself, beating the Times to the punch after being notified by the paper that it was preparing to publish the emails.
