Massive mako shark jumps onto fishing boat, gets stuck in handrail

In the clip, taken off the coast of Long Island in NY state, fisherman look on in horror as the mako shark writhes around on the deck of the boat with its body trapped beneath the guard-rail.

The shark - a mako - can be seen trapped beneath the guard rail on the deck as those aboard try and figure out what to do. Other voices in the background were heard discussing how to help the shark, while others admired the fish's size.

The shark's mouth become bloodied after it had bit the rail several times as it struggles to release itself. The charter crew member hooked the shark's mouth with fishing line to stabilize it. Once the shark was back where it belonged, Captain Low cut the rope that was tied around the fin and released the shark.

Mako sharks are known for their acrobatics on the hook, but sadly for a shark that leaped recently off Long Island, N.Y., the landing area was the anglers' boat.

Makos - which can grow up to 15ft in length - are open-ocean predators that are usually found in deep water areas.
