McCain's Blood Clot Blocks Obamacare Repeal Vote

McCain and eight others have expressed doubts about the bill and if they vote "no", it will fail.

But when asked Sunday about his Republican colleagues' amendment to the bill, Paul said that "they're trying to do what's right".

McCain underwent a procedure to remove a blood clot from his eye.

McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, was resting comfortably at home in good condition after the Friday operation, according to doctors at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix.

Although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's plan was to quickly vote on the legislation this week, McCain's surgery left Republicans scrambling as what already promised to be a tight vote would prove to be impossible without the senator from Arizona.

It was unclear how long the delay will be, reports The New York Times. Already, two GOP senators-Susan Collins from ME and Rand Paul from Kentucky-have pledged not to vote for the new bill, and McConnell can't afford to lose any more senators, including McCain, to pass the bill.

A half-dozen key senators, including McCain, were undecided on whether to go ahead with a procedural vote, putting the bill's future in serious jeopardy before McConnell punted. His office said he would spend next week in Arizona recovering from the surgery, leaving McConnell short of the votes to move forward.

"I don't see a lot here that would meaningfully change the CBO score", said Cynthia Cox of the non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation, a think-tank focusing on health policy, in an interview on Friday with Business Insider.

The vote, which was originally slated to take place this week, will now be deferred until McCain returns to the Senate.

McConnell and other GOP leaders have been urging senators to at least vote in favor of opening debate, which would allow senators to offer amendments. Republicans control 52 votes in the Senate and Sens.

One major sticking point in the revised healthcare bill is a provision by Senator #Ted Cruz to appease wary conservatives.

The Senate will postpone its consideration of the GOP bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act until Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) told CNN's "State of the Union".

Insurers have remained largely on the sidelines, even as doctor and hospital groups and consumer advocates have battled against the Republican bills in the House and Senate.

"This would allow the new plans to "cherry pick" only healthy people from the existing market making coverage unaffordable for the millions of people who need or want comprehensive coverage, including, for example, coverage for prescription drugs and mental health services", the letter states. The first attempt failed in June, as Republicans lacked the votes to pass their bill.
