Michelle Wie and the rest of the golfers at this year's U.S. Women's Open would prefer to focus on golf rather than answer questions about the tournament being played on a course owned by President Donald Trump.

Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey was awarded the tournament in 2012 but pressure on the United States Golf Association (USGA) to find an alternative venue has grown since previous year amid disrespectful comments made by the US President towards women.

But, as Trump's political fortunes rose, so did the call for the USGA to move the event away from Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster.

Katherine Kirk captured her first win on Tour since 2010 at last week's Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic and with that victory, earned a spot in the field at this week's U.S. Women's Open.

It took a while, but capturing her first major championship that year at Pinehurst has changed how she is viewed.

"Golf is all I focus on. We're here to play in a golf tournament, and I'm happy to be playing in the US Open".

"If you are hitting the ball really well, and I'm hitting it long right now, you should have a good chance at the U.S. Open", she said. Harding attended the 1921 U.S. Open at Columbia Country Club and presented the trophy and gold medal to victor Jim Barnes.

In the past 40 years, only Hollis Stacy (1977-78), Betsy King (1989-90), Annika Sorenstam (1995-96) and Karrie Webb (2000-01) have succesfully defended a U.S. Women's Open title and it has happened only seven times in the event's history.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. (AP) - This U.S. Women's Open is going to be unpredictable, and we're not just talking about the golf.

The USGA awarded the Women's Open to Trump National in 2012, long before Trump announced a presidential run.

"If you can just say listen, we're not about politics", Davis said.

"She's trying to get more consistent", Gilchrist told ESPN. She hasn't missed a cut at the U.S. Women's Open in a decade and has two other top-10 finishes to go along with her victory previous year at CordeValle in northern California. "It was good to take those couple of days off to refresh and then get energized for this stretch of events". She also won the U.S. Girls Junior in 2008. I'm excited to compete in this championship and it's really purely about the golf.

"Cristie's wired a little bit like me on the golf course". And this may be the reason why the U.S. Women's Open is the most favored.

"I can't imagine what it will be like here if he shows up", said a tournament volunteer outside the clubhouse, her light blue shirt sporting his name.

Typically, as McClatchy notes in a new report, golf club membership fees "take the form of refundable deposits".

World number 41 Brittany Lincicome said two weeks ago she hoped Trump would not appear at the event as the spotlight should be on the players. Only two finishes outside the top twenty including a win and four top other tens in twelve starts this year suggests she is near where she needs to be to contend for a third US Women's Open title.
