This announcement comes in the form of statements made by NASA's chief of human spaceflights William Gerstenmaier at a meeting of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronauts held on July 12.

In a meet of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronauts held on July 12, NASA admitted that the U.S. space agency can not afford to land humans on Mars.

The colonisation of Mars has always been a dream, and Nasa has openly spoken of its desire to send humans to the red planet by the 2030s. NASA has been grabbing headlines for years regarding its future possibility to send humans on Mars.

However, it's not that easy, especially with "too little funds". Many scientist an analysts say that this might be the tip of an ice berg that could mean that NASA may never launch another journey mars in the near future. The space agency hasn't even started designing vehicles to land on Mars or ascend from the surface, reports claim.

The reason, he said, is that "at the budget levels we described, this roughly 2 percent increase, we don't have the surface systems available for Mars".

Way back in 1997 the world saw Missions to Mars was a failure by NASA, which tried sixteen times to land spacecraft on the planet since 1970 and only seven were successful.

Private organisations working on their own missions to Mars have been more conservative with estimates - Mars One, a Dutch-Swiss organisation, aims to send four people to Mars at a cost of $6 billion, while SpaceX founder Elon Musk put the cost at $10 billion per person in 2016. "The truth is that American business is on the cutting edge of space technology", he had said.

"If we find out that there is water on the Moon and we want to do more extensive human operations on the Moon to explore that, we have the ability with Deep Space Gateway to support an extensive Moon surface program", he added.

At the time Lightfoot said he found that United States president Donald Trump was supportive of its goal to get humans to Mars, despite the $500m budget cut.
