NASA discovers stunning view of a sunspot

Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory first detected the huge spot last week, and it appears to have lingered through to this week

Nasa has spotted a large black dot on the surface of the sun which is 74,560 miles wide - nearly 11 times larger than Earth's diameter. The sunspot was visible the first time after the sun appeared spotless for the last two days.

The study suggested the amount of energy coming off the Sun shows it is emitting new extreme ultra-violet rays - which can be unsafe to humans and the environment.

The sun goes through a natural 11-year cycle, from the solar maximum-with its highest level of activity identified with numerous sunspots-to the solar minimum-with the least activity and the fewest sunspots.

We have heard and read about sunspots in the past - temporary phenomena on the photosphere of the sun that appear as dark spots (black blemishes) compared with surrounding regions.

The American space agency's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the imagery between 5th and 11th of July.

They may look small, but shouldn't be underestimated, because sunspots are actually larger than the Earth. A closer view of the side-by-side comparison discloses that the spot is bigger that the entire world sphere, which portrays the real picture of how huge the sun star itself is. They are a common phenomenon, and through scientists aren't entirely sure what causes them, they know that they're more frequent when the sun produces its most magnetic activity, known as the solar maximum.
