A military spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Manish Mehta said in Jammu that troops from the neighbouring country resorted to unprovoked shelling at Bhimber Gali, Mendhar and Balakote sectors of Poonch and Rajouri districts.

The media wing added Pakistan army troops responded befittingly to Indian firing to silence their guns.

Pakistan also shelled mortars on civilian areas in Balakote, Manjakote and Baroti belts, a police officer said. The jawan succumbed to injures while he was being rushed to the hospital. "The indiscriminate firing using small arms, automatics and mortars that started from 7.30 a.m.is still on".

They said that the shelling happened in Kamalkote area of Uri at around 3:30 pm on Monday.

He said three schools, a panchayat ghar and other locations have been notified as camps for likely evacuation of border people in case of emergency situation.

"This was evident from continued attempts of sniping and targeting of our troops undertaken through cross border actions duly supported by Pakistani Army troops", it was conveyed.

Tensions between the two nuclear neighbors has failed to ease after 19 Indian soldiers were killed in Indian-held Kashmir last month by militants India claimed had links with Pakistan.

On Pakistan Ranger's request, the BSF on Monday also held a high-level meet with the Rangers on the global border in Samba sector.
