Patriots great Babe Parilli dies at 87

Vito "Babe" Parilli, Joe Namath's able, ageless backup on the Jets" 1968 Super Bowl team and "69 playoff squad, has died.

Parilli led New England's offense during the 1960s, throwing for 16,747 yards between 1961-67.

Vito "Babe" Parilli was born in Rochester, Pennsylvania - not far from Namath's hometown of Beaver Falls.

Parilli was a two-time First Team All-American, Heisman Trophy nominee while leading the Wildcats to appearances in the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl. He was an All-American in 1950 and 1951. Parilli put together a solid National Football League career at quarterback and backed up Joe Namath with the Super Bowl III champion New York Jets. He played six seasons in the National Football League and 10 years in the AFL. He was voted to three AFL All-Star games and was the AFL's Comeback Player of the Year in 1966.

It's an bright and sunny day here in New England, but sadly one of the original members of the Boston Patriots has left us on this lovely day.

During the regular season, Parilli, wearing the No. 15 uniform that he sported with the Pats, completed 29 of 55 passes for 401 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions for the Jets.

A college football star as well, Parilli was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1982 before being inducted into Patriots Hall of Fame in 1993. After taking the reigns of the Chicago Winds of the WFL, he spent time with the New England Steamrollers, Denver Dynamite, Charlotte Rage, Las Vegas Sting, Anaheim Piranhas and Florida Bobcats in the Arena Football League.
