Redskins QB Kirk Cousins not expected to receive long-term contract extension

San Francisco signed a bridge QB this offseason in Brian Hoyer and didn't draft a future starter, so until they either settle on a QB or Cousins signs with Washington on a multi-year deal, those rumors will likely persist. He also cites sources claiming Cousins would be open to signing a long-term deal with the 'Skins after 2017.

Don't expect Kirk Cousins to have a long-term contract signed with the Redskins by the NFL's franchise deadline at 4 p.m. ET Monday.

Cousins will earn almost $24 million guaranteed by playing under the franchise tag in 2017. And, on Sunday, that was all but confirmed with just over 24 hours before the July 17 deadline to sign franchise tagged players.

In February, Washington placed the exclusive franchise tag on Cousins, which prevented any interested National Football League team from negotiating with the player himself.

The soon-to-be 29-year-old Cousins was originally selected by the Redskins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Michigan State.

Kirk Cousins has to prove himself to the Washington Redskins once more this upcoming season.

The two sides have been negotiating throughout the offseason but made little progress. If the Redskins and Cousins can not come to terms on an agreement, it would mean that he would have to bet on his play improving for a third year in a row. Cousins will be playing on the tag for the second straight year, which means he's very likely to hit the free-agent market in 2018.

But after taking over as the full-time quarterback, Cousins has thrived. If they approach the level of a.500 team, the 49ers would be selecting toward the middle of the first round and, potentially, they would not have an opportunity to select one of the top quarterbacks. If that happened, then the Redskins would have seven days to match.

The 49ers chose to be patient this offseason at the quarterback position.
