Rey's Force Awakens Monopoly Token Meets A Tragic Fate

Rey still *isn't* a part of "Star Wars" Monopoly, because sometimes we can't have nice things

A Hasbro spokesperson noted that a Rey token was created and included in editions sold in other countries.

Remember the outcry over the lack of a Rey token in Hasbro's The Force Awakens edition of Monopoly a year ago?

According to the Chicago Tribune, 18 months after Hasbro told a young girl that it would release a new version with a Rey token in Star Wars Monopoly, the company reneged on that promise. "This product was sold to retailers in several markets around the world, but is not available for sale in the US due to insufficient interest". Hasbro did clarify that a Rey token could be obtained by contacting the company's customer service department, but that seems like hoping a Band-Aid will heal a gash, as misogyny has been an issue with Star Wars merchandising in the past.

While making Rey available to anyone who asks for it is pretty great, fans would love to see Rey right away in the Star Wars: Monopoly game. Public outcry even culminated in a running social media hashtag #WheresRey, forcing Hasbro to release a statement that Daisy Ridley's Jedi would be added to the game at some point in 2016.

Annie Rose Goldman wrote the letter that sparked the outcry.

Annie Rose Goldman, a very smart 8-year-old, wrote the following letter to Hasbro upon finding out that there was no Rey figure in her Star Wars Monopoly set. She pointed out that a lot of kids won't know to call the company and said she was disappointed. "I would still like to see it where any girl or boy or person who goes to buy the game, Rey is in there. It awakens in her!" And without her, the bad guys would have won!

At the center of the controversy was Hasbro's Star Wars Monopoly board game, which included an all-male roster of playable characters: Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, and Finn. She's a powerful female character, one that young people definitely look up to. "You'd expect to have a female character at least".

He purchased the game for his 4-year-old son from Amazon in April and sent Twitter message to Hasbro complaining about the omission.

Retailers were initially caught flat-footed by the demand for Rey and other female characters in Star Wars, but they have since started to catch up. The updated Monopoly with Rey was sold in various overseas markets, just never in America.

"She's like, "Oh, OK, I have to choose from those ones, '" he said". "'Star Wars" may be more of a male kind of film.
