Ryan Lochte Cleared of All Charges Related to Rio Olympics Incident

2016 was a VERY busy year for your brain, but if you quickly flip back through your internal WTF mental catalog, you might recall that odd incident where US gold medalist Ryan Lochte allegedly lied about being mugged while attending the Rio Olympics last August.

A USA Today Sports investigation found that Lochte's story was substantially true and did not constitute a false report.

The court has not yet published the decision and prosecutors have 15 days to challenge the ruling, according to the USA Today report.

Back in August, Lochte was indicted for "false reporting of a crime" for falsely stating that he and three teammates were robbed at gunpoint in an interview with NBC News.

Rio police later said that the Olympians had vandalized the gas station bathroom by breaking a soap dispenser and mirror, and destroying a poster outside the restroom. Lochte's lawyers have been pressing for a dismissal of the case, but a lower court had ruled 2-1 to uphold the charge. "It has been a long year, but in the end, justice prevailed", said Jeff Ostrow, Lochte's Florida-based attorney, in a statement to USA Today. While he was able to leave Brazil quickly, his three teammates were detained, with Feigen agreeing to pay a fine of almost $11,000 to expedite his departure. His suspension left him unable to compete at last month's USA nationals, making him ineligible for the world championships later this month in Budapest.

Lochte lost multiple sponsors stemming from the incident and became a national punch line, but has continued to train in the pool and is eyeing another return to the Olympics in 2020 for the Tokyo Summer Games.
