Soar Over Pluto and Charon in Dazzling New Horizons Anniversary Videos

Get a look at what the surface of Pluto and its moon Charon really look like

The scientists used the actual New Horizon data and the new advanced elevation models of Pluto planet together with its biggest moon, Charon, to produce stunning movies that gives spectacular new outlook of many odd features that were discovery earlier.

This new, detailed global mosaic color map of Pluto is based on a series of three color filter images obtained by the Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera aboard New Horizons during the NASA spacecraft's close flyby of Pluto in July 2015.

One video focuses on Pluto itself, beginning above the craggy highlands southwest of the 620-mile-wide (1,000 kilometers) nitrogen-ice plain known as Sputnik Planitia - the western half of Pluto's famous "heart".

The video shows everything from ice plains to mountain ranges, and was created using "data and digital elevation models" that NASA collected during New Horizons's fly by.

As a result, viewers are offered new, stunning perspectives of Pluto and Charon depicting unusual features discovered in New Horizons images over the past two years.

Now, New Horizons is way beyond Pluto, journeying to another object at edge of the Solar System. All feature names in the Pluto system are informal.

The equally exciting flight over Charon begins high over the hemisphere New Horizons saw on its closest approach, then descends over the deep, wide canyon of Serenity Chasma. But you can relive the flyby with this new animation from NASA that takes you over Pluto's unique terrain. The flyover then moves south, covering an area called Oz Terra before ending at the Vulcan Planum plains and Clarke Montes mountains.

Formed in 1958, NASA is one of the preeminent space agencies now in operation, is the only organization to land astronauts on the surface of the Moon, to carry out extended missions on the planet Mars and more.
