Tufts nurses end strike; not welcome back at work yet

Tufts Medical Center Nurses to Wage One Day Strike

Tufts Medical Center Nurses to Wage One Day Strike

But the hospital has already made it clear the union nurses will be locked out until Monday.

They planned to return to the job Thursday at 7 a.m., but the hospital had already brought in more than 320 replacement nurses to fill the void.

"The union believes it can hold Tufts Medical Center hostage for more money - money we don't have", hospital CEO Dr. Michael Wagner said, according to the hospital's Twitter feed. "I hope that the management of Tufts Medical Center will end this lock out and sit back down with their nurses to come to a fair agreement". The MNA said Tufts nurses are the lowest paid nurses in Boston and called their pension benefits "the worst in the city".

"We haven't gotten official notification of a 4-day lockout. We don't have the staff", OR nurse Eileen Agranat said.

"It's disrespectful. It feels very devaluing", Mary Havlicek Cornacchia, a Tufts nurse and co-chair of the bargaining committee told the Boston Globe.

1,200 nurses make up the union that began their strike on Wednesday and plan to continue through Thursday.

The hospitals have resorted to pressure tactics to deal with the statewide agitation conducted by nurses demanding pay hike.

Part of the MNA playbook is staging a dramatic scene the morning after a strike.

Nurses, however, disagree with the hospital's stance and say they did not receive proper notice saying they would not be allowed back to work after striking.

A union representative says hospital management was "determined to force a strike".
