UK's Fox: Britain seeking stability, confidence with USA after Brexit

Post-Brexit trade deals 'may lower UK animal welfare standards'

Post-Brexit trade deals 'may lower UK animal welfare standards'

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox is in the United States this week to lay the foundations for trade talks with the country, but his efforts were dealt an early blow due to concerns about food standards.

The British Poultry Council, the industry body, said it "rejects the notion of importing chlorine-washed chickens as part of a makeweight in trade negotiations with the US".

British trade minister Liam Fox said on Sunday that he backed a transition agreement to smooth Britain's departure from the European Union, but it would have to come to an end before the next election due in 2022.

Theresa May's official spokesman said maintaining safety and public confidence in food was of the highest priority, but it was too early to get into the specificsand "hypotheticals" of any deal.

Downing Street said any trade deal must work for both consumers and farmers.

The UK-US trade and investment working group will begin to outline a deal which has already been talked up by President Donald Trump.

The paper say a rift is developing between Dr Fox and Boris Johnson against Environment Secretary Michael Gove over whether to allow the import of poultry treated with a chlorine wash process after Brexit.

There are also concerns that such "washes" would be used by less scrupulous meat processing plants to increase the shelf-life of meat, making it appear fresher than it really is.

Ben Bradshaw, a Labour MP and supporter of the Open Britain campaign group, said: "This row about chlorine chicken is a direct result of the government's decision to leave the single market".

Number 10 described the controversy around chlorine-washed chickens as "hypothetical" but refused to rule out any future watering down of food standards in the UK. "We want to see that figure grow and every effort must be made to support British exporters and reduce unnecessary barriers to trade, but never at the expense of the interests of British consumers and producers".

The Telegraph reported yesterday that the cabinet was split over the controversial production method.

"By arguing the case for chlorine-washed chicken, Liam Fox shows he is ready to abandon British poultry farmers in favour of cheap USA imports that do not meet our sanitary or animal welfare standards", he said.

Dr Fox said: 'The first meeting of the UK-US trade and investment working group is the start of the next chapter in our special relationship.

Speaking last week, he said there would be "no compromise" on standards and that he believed being a world leader in free trade and animal welfare should not be incompatible.
