“Apes” overthrowing “Spider-Man” at Box Office
It was pegged at US$60 million-US$65 million earlier in the week, but is ending up about the same as 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which kicked off the modern trilogy with US$54.8 million during its opening weekend.
The final installation in the new "Planet of the Apes" trilogy stays true to its roots: It contains several nods to the original 1968 movie that spawned the franchise. In addition, this "threequel" also indicates some sequel fatigue among moviegoers, as the number is a 22-per-cent drop from the previous instalment, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", which opened to $72.6 million in 2014.
"With eight weekends to go in the summer, Fox's all around audited "War for the Planet of the Apes" joins "Spider Man: Homecoming" in a shared objective to support the fortunes of a season that has endured under the heaviness of five continuous down ends of the week versus a year ago, and a 8% running shortfall", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media investigator.
Internationally, War for the Planet of the Apes grossed $46 million from 61 markets, for a worldwide debut of $102.5 million. There aren't many high-profile offerings with substantial buzz on the horizon, so if Apes holds well and doesn't have a drastic drop-off in its second weekend, it'll be in good shape for its run. So, not exactly a flop.
"Despicable Me 3", from Universal Pictures, grossed nearly $19M this weekend, the animated-comedy has now grossed over $187M in three-weeks.
Directed by Matt Reeves, the film opened to a decent start.
Coming in at No. 3 was Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig's animated flick, Despicable Me 3, earning $18.9 million for a total of $188 million.
The top ten films grossed an estimated $157.2M which was up 4% from past year when The Secret Life of Pets stayed at number one with $50.8M; but down 12% from 2015 when Ant-Man debuted in the top spot with $57.2M.
War for the Planet of the Apes, which sees Caesar and his apes facing off against Woody Harrelson's ruthless Colonel, was a success story for 20th Century Fox, who, like many, expected the film to fall much closer to Homecoming's totals. Spider-Man: Homecoming has yet to release in Belgium, Spain, Japan, and China. The latest from Illumination raised its Stateside total to $187.9 million. Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan headline the acclaimed feature, which was written by Nanjiani and produced by Judd Apatow. Given the film's continued durability, it should pass the $400 million mark by mid-August.
Superhero smash Wonder Woman comes in sixth with $6.8 million.
In seventh is the new horror film Wish Upon, which made $5.5 million in its first three days. Wish Upon received a C CinemaScore.
