"The victory in Mosul, a city where ISIS once proclaimed its so-called caliphate, signals that its days in Iraq and Syria are numbered".

Britain will send lifesaving aid and provide extra funding to help civilians in war-torn Mosul. So when Iraqi forces finally seized the city, it was only a matter of time before formal victory over IS was declared.

According to information gathered by the UN Human Rights Office, worldwide crimes may have been perpetrated by IS during the three years that the group was in control, not only of Mosul, but of large areas of Iraq.

About 900,000 residents have been displaced by the fighting, and thousands of civilians are believed to have been killed.

Amnesty said Iraqi forces and the coalition had carried out a series of unlawful attacks in west Mosul since January, relying heavily on Improvised Rocket Assisted Munitions (IRAMs), weapons with crude targeting capabilities that wreaked havoc in densely populated areas.

In declaring victory for the Iraqi forces over the Islamic State in Mosul, the largest city the group occupied, Iraqi Ambassador to Korea Wadee Al-Batti thanked the South Korean government and nongovernmental organizations for providing Iraq with financial and humanitarian assistance.

Stephen Townsend told a news briefing in Washington that he strongly rejected the statement that coalition strikes violated global law.

Human Rights Watch has condemned videos circulating on social media purportedly showing Iraqi forces killing and beating suspected militants.

There are also humanitarian and stabilisation efforts desperately needed to ease the suffering of Mosul citizens and start the city on the road to recovery, he said.

The militants hold less than one square kilometer (mile) of territory, but are using civilians as human shields, making it almost impossible for US-led warplanes to flush them out.

As work begins to fix more than $1bn (£777m) worth of homes and infrastructure, Government-funded UK Aid will provide clean drinking water, food, tents, cooking equipment, soap and vaccinations against deadly diseases.

In all, 5,805 civilians may have been killed in the fight for western Mosul by coalition attacks, Amnesty said, citing data from Airwars, an organization monitoring civilian deaths caused by the anti-IS coalition in Iraq and Syria.
