Aggressive Federer cruises to semifinals in Montreal

Roger Federer maintained his superb run of form with a straight-set win over Dutchman Robin Haase in the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup.

2016 was undoubtedly Shapovalov's finest year in the ITF juniors circuit as he won the Wimbledon's Boys' Singles title by defeating Australian Alex De Minaur in the final despite dropping the first set. It got worse for Polansky as he fell to a 5-0 deficit in the second set, and came to within a point of being bagelled.

With the win, his world ranking will rise from 143rd to about 67th.

But he broke Bautista-Agut's serve in the ensuing game and never looked back.

Haase, who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the third round, was in his first career semifinal of a Masters Series tournament. He saved two match points in a 16-point final game with Zverev serving for the match before the German finally finished off the upstart to notch his 45th win of 2017.

"It's an unbelievable week for me, a completely life-changing week for me", Shapovalov said on court immediately afterwards, even as the audience at Uniprix Stadium - nee Jarry Park - embraced him in a standing ovation.

"I started off pretty slow, just drained from yesterday".

Shapovalov's biggest win of his young career against the 15-time Grand Slam victor came as a result of some inspired tennis in front of a boisterous home crowd who cheered his every shot.

Top seed Rafael Nadal faced a stunning R16 exit at the ongoing Rogers Cup, but second seed Roger Federer seems to be nonchalantly going about his business in Montreal.

"I think those young players don't quite know what to expect, and (neither) do I, because nobody quite knows", said Federer. A victory would give Federer, now ranked third in the world, one of the top two seeds at the U.S. Open that begins August 28 in NY.

In the semi-final on Saturday, Haase will face the victor of the clash between Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut. Trailing 6-5 in the second set, Shapovalov forced the decisive game to 40-all, and on three separate occassions had the advantage to force a tiebreak. "I knew that was a very big turning point", Shapovalov said.

Ferrer's timing from the back of the court was like clockwork in the opening set, as he stepped up onto the baseline and took the match to Federer. Number one for me was anyway something for later in the year. He is Wimbledon's golden boy once again, and the tennis world has found itself reformed believers of the graceful and timeless Swiss champion. "You have to win these matches".

As an 18-year-old on wild card entry to the tournament, this event was supposed to be an opportunity for him to earn experience, maybe win a match or two and perhaps get a few balls signed by one of his idols after losing to them.
