Are Fidget Spinners Dangerous? Consumer Group Issues a Warning

Safety Regulators Issue Safety Alert For Still-Popular Fidget Spinners

Fidget spinners are great for stress relief and very popular among children but also among adults.

"Fidget spinners can be fun to use but consumers and companies should be aware of some of the safety concerns associated with this product", U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle said in a statement .

Always use the cable that came with the fidget spinner.

The spinners are especially popular with teenagers, and what teenagers find cool, younger children want to play with.

These batteries, like those used in hoverboards, can be charged - although it's unclear if the batteries are lithium-ion.

CPSC advised that fidget spinners shouldn't be left unattended while charging, and should never be plugged in overnight.

So far this year, there have been several incidents in which chargeable fidget spinners have burst into flames while plugged in.

The CPSC is investigating reports that pieces can break off spinners, posing a choking hazard, and that battery-operated spinners potentially can spark fires.

Keep fidget spinners away from children under 3 years of age.

For consumers, the CPSC recommends that fidget spinner users avoid playing with them around their faces or putting them in their mouths. The regulations recommend being present when the batteries are charging, only using the charger provided with the spinner, and unplugging the spinner as soon as the batteries are fully charged-the "do not look into the sun" of safety recommendations. I'm not exaggerating: One of the CPSC's safety tips is to check that you have working smoke detectors if you have fidget spinners with batteries in your house.

There have been a handful of choking incidents reported with the toys, as well as two instances of battery-operated spinners catching on fire and another incident in which a fidget spinner melted, the agency said.

CPSC business requirements and guidelines for fidget spinners are available in our Business Education Center.
