Arsenal, Leicester Trade Leads In Raucous Premier League Opener

The club's star signing of the summer, Alexandre Lacazette, put his new team ahead 1-0 before the two-minute mark, heading-in a cross from Mohamed Elneny.

Just 83 days since the last Premier League season ended, the English top flight back to start it all over again... and kicking-off on a Friday for the first ever time. There was still plenty to do, but somehow Lacazette found the pace and the direction to plant a header into the bottom corner, with not even two minutes showing up yet on the clock.

It brings him level with former Arsenal favourite Kevin Campbell, who breached Manchester City swiftly at Highbury in 1994, while Colombia great Faustino Asprilla also punished Sheffield Wednesday in the second minute of the 1997-98 campaign while at Newcastle United.

Asked if Giroud could still leave before the transfer window closes on August 31 until January, Wenger replied: "No".

Danny Welbeck then made it 2-2 on the stroke of half time, but Vardy had given Leicester the lead once again in the 56th minute.

After nearly 30 minutes being a goal down, the Gunners look destined for an opening day defeat but their so often hero, Aaron Ramsey, who came on a second half substitute, drilled the ball past the goalkeeper after showing some excellent control. "I must tell you I opened the door for him at some stage (to leave) because it's important for him to play".

Arsenal recorded five victories and two losses in the pre-season and are flying high as they've beaten Chelsea in the Community Shield and picked up first piece of silverware this season.

"Lacazette is simple - in every game he's stronger since he joined us", said Wenger, who had seen his side lose at home in three of their previous four opening league fixtures.

It's safe to say we all know about Leicester's counter attacking capability and it was a case of new season, same story for the east Midlands club.

But if Wenger plays two strikers then Giroud, with his physical presence, would be a really good complement to Lacazette, a lethal goalscorer that loves getting the ball inside the box.

Bookmakers have turned very much towards Sanchez staying at Arsenal.

The visitors restored their lead 10 minutes into the second half, as Vardy lost his marker and headed home Mahrez's corner at the near post, 2-3.
