Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday committed A$122 million (S$131 million) to the postal vote, run by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, with ballot papers sent out by Sept 12 and due back in early November.

The voluntary plebiscite, in which voters would mail their ballots from September 12 until November 7, would cost AU$122 million. "We trust the Australian people", he said.

It's worth noting that this is not an election but a voluntary, non-binding postal plebiscite.

I agree the whole debate has been a dog's breakfast and a plebiscite is an enormous waste of money when a vote on the floor of parliament could get the job done.

She also urged the government not to expose her children with her female partner to hate.

"There are no constitutional or legal reasons to hold this nationwide vote whatsoever".

'We have serious doubts and grave concerns about the validity of the government's expenditure in this matter and we think these issues need to be determined by the court, ' she said.

'If we have to vote, let us vote "no" to gay marriage for the sake of Australia, our children and our children's children'.

Polls have found majority support for same-sex marriage, and the opposition Labor Party have used Turnbull's trouble legalizing it to attack him.

Marriage equality advocates have vowed to challenge the postal vote in court, saying the government might be exceeding its executive authority, casting doubt on whether the ballot would go ahead.

The federal government announced on Tuesday it would try to reintroduce its plebiscite into the Senate this week, but if the vote failed - which is likely - it would then move to conduct a postal vote of the Australian public instead.

"I feel as a citizen I'm being treated in a second-class way by interposing an arrangement of this kind between the making of the law in parliament, which is where it should be done", he said.

Supporters say it would give ordinary people a voice in a debate dominated by activists.

"I'm really annoyed actually, this is an issue I'm really concerned about and I think it's annoying the cut off is so close to my birthday". That's $24 million. All funded by the taxpayers of Australia when in fact it should be paid by the parliamentarians who declined to do the job for which they are being paid.

"I am. deeply anxious that a government — any government — thinks that it has the authority to bypass the Parliament, that any government thinks that it is a law unto itself, that any government would think that the constitution doesn't matter".
