Ayodhya dispute: Apex court begins hearing pleas against HC verdict

The bench, also comprising justices Ashok Bhushan and Abdul Nazeer, asked the Uttar Pradesh government to complete within 10 weeks the translation of the evidence recorded for adjudication of the title dispute in the high court into English.

Nearly seven years after the Allahabad High Court's September 30, 2010 order dividing the 2.7-acre disputed land at the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site equally between Ram Lalla, Nirmohi Akhara and Sunni Waqf Board, the Supreme Court is scheduled to take up cross-appeals on August 11.

The bench gave time to complete translation of almost 1 lakh pages from eight different languages to English and said the time frame fixed by it for completion of pleadings is final and no adjournment will be granted.

MC Dhingra, the lawyer appearing for Shia Waqf Board in the Ayodhya case, while speaking to ANI on the same, said that the Shia Board has made a decision to leave the one-third land allotted to them, to avoid problems for both the religious denominations, in regard to their prayers. Mr. Sibal and Mr. Dhawan said the documents needed to be translated first and the translations had to be finalised before the hearings start.

The Uttar Pradesh government insisted that the court hearing begin soon and the parties could, on their own, translate the documents they intend to rely on as and when they require them during the hearings.

This suggestion was strongly objected to by the Sunni Waqf Board represented by senior advocate Anoop Chaudhari and senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for some of the opposing parties.

The mosque was demolished by Hindu Karsevaks on December 6, 1992 in Ayodhya.

The board alleged the mosque was being looked after by the Shia community even since it was constructed but the British government had erroneously included it amongst the Sunni Waqfs in 1944 and it had approached Faizabad civil court in 1945 which had dismissed its claim a year after.

Supreme Court was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the Allahabad court verdict in the Ayodhya dispute case.

The bench said the parties themselves would translate the required documents and in case of any dispute it would examine it at the relevant time.

The apex court reached a consensus on commencement of the hearing on the cross-appeals filed against the 2010 high court judgment. Incidentally, Justice Misra is set to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) on August 28.

The high court's Lucknow bench had said the disputed 2.77 acre area at Ayodhya should be partitioned equally among three parties - the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.
