Bihar flood toll reaches 253, 1.26 crore affected

As it is, more than 1.38 crore people living in 19 districts of the state Kishanganj, Araria, Purnea, Katihar, East Champaran, West Champaran, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Supaul, Madhepura, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Saharsa, Araria, Saran, Samastipur and Patna are reeling under flood water.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi would make an aerial survey of flood-affected districts of state on August 26, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said.

In Patna, Modi will meet with senior state officials to review rescue and relief work being carried out in North Bihar.

As per reports, almost 7.34 lakh people have been moved to safer areas in the state.

Three columns of Army were deployed in flood-hit Katihar district for the relief and rescue operation.

"At least 26 NDRF teams are working to control the situation".

No fresh deaths due to the deluge were reported and the toll stood at 70, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

The floods also hit Kaziranga National Park, killing over 140 animals. Altogether 304 persons have died while lakhs displaced in this year's flood. Embankments, roads and bridges in Dhemaji and Dhubri districts are the worst affected. Though the water level in most rivers showed receding trend on Tuesday, it was still flowing above the danger mark at different places.

The Brahmaputra river is still flowing above the danger mark at some places.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has requested Union Railway, Transport and Civil Aviation ministers to see that train services were restored at the earliest and smooth movement of goods-laden trucks resumed to ease suffering of flood-affected people.

"Our officers are constantly monitoring the situation as people are returning home from relief camps", he said.

In West Bengal, the ongoing floods have claimed 152 lives and caused losses to the tune of Rs 14,000 crore in 11 districts of the state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday after visiting three northern districts where large areas continued to be submerged.
