Bills trade Watkins to Rams for CB Gaines & 2nd round pick

The Bills announced the trade of the former South Fort Myers High School star via its official Twitter account. They traded cornerback Ronald Darby to the Eagles for wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round pick.

The reality is that the Bills probably didn't want to pay Watkins number one receiver money next year, mostly because he just can't stay healthy.

Watkins is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Watkins, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, spent four seasons with the Bills but spent much of last season injured.

As a result of these transactions, the Bills now own two selections in the first, second and third round of the 2018 Draft. Gaines back to Buffalo alongside a 2018 second round pick. The shakeup continues an offseason overhaul under new coach Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane. In three seasons with the Bills in 37 games, he had 153 catches for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Buffalo essentially traded Gaines for Darby in these two trades, as well. He's caught 225 passes for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns, but his inconsistency and his lack of focus was an issue in Philadelphia. Watkins never lived up to the lofty expectations placed on him after the Bills spent two first-round picks to get him.
