Bills trade Watkins to Rams; get Matthews from Eagles

Sammy Watkins is heading west to the Los Angeles Rams as the Buffalo Bills send their former first-round pick to the Rams in exchange for cornerback E.J Gaines and a 2018 second-round pick.

Simultaneously, the organization of the State of NY has entered into another covenant, assignor to the Philadelphia Eagles for the half of corner Ronald Darby, and through the acquisition of the receiver away Jordan Matthews, as well as a selection of the third round.

Buffalo also continued stockpiling 2018 draft picks by acquiring a second-round selection from Los Angeles and a third-rounder from the Eagles.

The moves were made day after Buffalo opened its preseason with a 17-10 loss to Minnesota. First-year Bills coach Sean McDermott avoided using that rebuilding label for his team this offseason, but it now can be slapped on the 2017 Bills, who have clearly sacrificed short-term gain for potential long-term success.

Watkins is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and is cheap for the Rams, at a salary of just $690,000 this year.

Watkins, 24, was the fourth overall pick in the 2014 draft after playing in college at Clemson.

Gaines was a valuable defensive back in the Rams' rotation.

The Bills dealt a sixth-round pick to the Rams as part of the Watkins trade.

Turn out the lights on the Buffalo Bills' 2017 season, because it is over before it started.

Darby has 137 tackles and two interceptions in two National Football League seasons. In three seasons, Watkins has caught 65, 60 and 28.

Matthews had been Philadelphia's most productive receiver, averaging 75 catches, 891 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his first three seasons.
