Brighton bank on surprise factor to upset City

Pep Guardiola claims there will be no immediate repeat of this summer's lavish spending at Manchester City.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said the club will curb their transfer spending in future years after a huge outlay on players during the close season.

Such expenditure has raised eyebrows in some quarters, but Guardiola insists the expensive revamp of his squad was necessary...

City have splashed out on Ederson, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo as Guardiola plots an improvement on the first trophyless campaign of his coaching career.

"We finished the contracts of five or six players and in the last six or seven years Manchester City didn't buy full-backs, so we had to buy full-backs".

From goalkeeper to forwards Manchester City have the best squad in England, as some of their backups could start for a top six side in England.

"We spent, but all the teams spent.

It's normal that the players and supporters are going to be celebrating for a period of time, but we have had to come down to reality", Brighton boss Hughton said.

"We had one of the oldest teams in the Premier League so we made a decision to put energy in the team for the next five, six years", he said.

"So we buy three and the market is so demanding right now for all the teams around the world, not just Manchester City". Our fans really get behind us and they're going to step it up even more because they know we need them even more. City have had impressive results in preseason when applying the three in the back, with wins over Real Madrid, Tottenham, and West Ham, City have only conceded one goal throughout these three friendlies and scored ten.

"We did it earlier, so we were lucky because now it would be so much more expensive with what has happened in the last weeks".

"The Club was clever to do that because we anticipated what we needed after last season". We will change one important player, it depends on who we are going to stay.

Playing three at the back may enable Guardiola to associate Aguero and Jesus in attack, after he generally used a single-striker system last season following Jesus's arrival in January. "We are going to see at the end of the season what happens, knowing how hard it is".

"We make good things last season with the player we had", he said.

Guardiola again pointed to a defensive example in his examination of inflated fees in the current climate, suggesting a younger Dani Alves would command a fee similar to that which City paid for Walker and Mendy.

"I think sooner or later it will finish, it's unsustainable", he said of teams paying big fees.
