Bryce Harper on 10-day disabled list with hyperextended left knee

Series opener between the Nationals and Giants is rained out

The morning after Harper slipped on a wet base, hyperextended his left knee and crumpled to the dirt in pain, the Nationals announced that he has been diagnosed with a "significant" bone bruise. Harper avoided any ligament or tendon damage.

The Giants (46-70) are almost 35 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, and the Nationals (68-45) are 15 games ahead in the National League East after a 3-2 win on Thursday at home against the Miami Marlins.

It had been raining for most of the night, as the game didn't start until around 10 p.m. E.T. following a three-hour rain delay.

The 24-year-old Harper, the 2015 National League MVP, is having another outstanding season, hitting.326 with 29 home runs and 87 RBIs in 106 games this season.

"You're just thinking, 'Please, Lord, don't let it be serious, '" Baker said.

There has been no update on Harper's injury. Harper has been relatively healthy this season and missed just three days with mild groin soreness back in May.

"He's definitely one of those guys that you can't replace on a team".

Harper eventually needed to be carried off the field.

The Nationals enter Sunday with a 14½-game lead in the National League East. Washington and San Francisco are set for a doubleheader Sunday. He struck out five batters, walked one and surrendered five base hits, including a solo home run by second baseman Joe Panik in the first inning.

Harper suffered a hyper-extended knee, according to Washington manager Dusty Baker. They have been without Adam Eaton since late April because of a torn ACL in his left knee that ended his season, Jayson Werth since early June because of a bruised left foot and Michael Taylor since July with a right oblique strain.

"We dodged a bullet here", said Rizzo, who emphasized the Nationals will be cautious in Harper's recovery process.
