Hyeon Soo Lim was released on what state media described as "sick bail" after being handed a life sentence with hard labour in 2015.

An effective dispute settlement mechanism is essential in any trade agreement, Canada's foreign affairs minister said on Friday, less than a week before the first round of negotiations on the North American trade pact.

Hyeon Soo Lim, formerly the senior pastor at one of Canada's largest churches, had disappeared on a mission to North Korea in early 2015.

James Lim said his dad was in "good health", but noted that the family planned to arrange for extended medical attention, including checkups.

The Canadian pastor was punished after he was accused of "defaming the supreme leadership, using religion to disrupt the country's system, helping American and South Korean to abduct North Korean citizens and spreading negative propaganda about the country overseas".

U.S. President Donald Trump set a confrontational tone Tuesday, when he said the United States would respond to North Korean threats "with fire and fury the world has never seen".

"It's a delicate dance".

The release comes at a time of swirling worldwide tension in Pyongyang, Steven Denney, a doctoral fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs' Asian Institute, has said it is possible that Mr. Lim's release was intended as a goodwill message, to try to portray itself as a country capable of reasonable negotiation.

The Canadian government issued a statement saying it joined Lim's family and congregation in celebrating his homecoming.

Lim arrived in Toronto in the late morning Saturday, and is "landed and resting", according to a press release from his family.
