A state police helicopter flying above a clash between protesters crashed Saturday near a golf course in the Virginia woods, killing two people on board, police said.

According to NBC News, Virginia State Police say the crash happened in a wooded area and no one on the ground was injured.

Following the clashes, a state of emergency was declared by the authorities, and police and security forces were deployed in riot gears.

"Our state police and law enforcement family at-large are mourning this tragic outcome to an already challenging day", said Col. W. Steven Flaherty, the Virginia State Police superintendent.

Cullen was a lieutenant who graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy in May 1994 as a member of the 90th Basic Session, according to a press release. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Virginia State Police said in a statement.

Turner first met Lt. Cullen during his time at Virginia State Police more than a decade ago.

This is a devastating loss for their families, the Virginia State Police, and the entire Commonwealth.

Bates is survived by a wife and two children.

"These heroes were a part of our family and we are simply heartbroken", the couple said in a statement.

In addition to the one death and 19 injuries in the car- ramming incident, the city said there were at least 15 other injuries associated with the scheduled rally by white supremacists against the planned removal of the statue.

Hundreds of white supremacists clashed with counter demonstrators as a auto rammed into the crowd and a police helicopter crashed, killing at least three people and injuring 19 others in the U.S. state of Virginia.

This is a developing story.
