Coutinho hands transfer request to Liverpool

Barcelona set sights on Tottenham's Christian Eriksen as Liverpool refuse to sell Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool had earlier tried to clarify their position on Coutinho by releasing a statement from its owner Fenway Sports Group.

Pearce, the Liverpool reporter for the Liverpool Echo later claimed that Coutinho did in fact hand in a transfer request, but not until about an hour after Sky claimed he had already done so.

Barcelona had a bid of around £90 million (S$160m) for the Brazil global rejected by the Reds on Wednesday.

Coutinho clearly wants out and is doing all he can to force a move but the fact is he's under a long contract with Liverpool.

The reds now have 20 days of the transfer window left to hold firm to their word - a period which involves an important Champions League playoff fixture.

Yet with Liverpool steadfastly refusing to soften their position in the face of a third offer, Coutinho made a decision to attempt to take matters into his own hands.

Barça have plenty of money to spend, having sold Coutinho's compatriot Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record £198m last week.

More worryingly for Liverpool, the family member explained that his relationship with Klopp has fractured, saying that he "does not have the trust of his manager".

The next step in this saga will be an interesting one as to whether Barcelona take this statement seriously or simply come back with a further increased offer to tempt Liverpool to offload the Brazilian.

Coutinho is understood to have submitted the transfer request personally via e-mail.

Rivaldo believes Coutinho, 25, would be a good addition and also feels some of the cash should be used on another Brazilian target of Barcelona, Guanghzou Evergrande midfielder Paulinho.

Unfortunately, the Reds have turned down the offer and club boss Jürgen Klopp has insisted that he will not be sold this summer.

Questioned on whether his job now was to keep Coutinho happy, Klopp added: "I can't keep players happy". It's how we try do it when we want to bring players in.
