It was later spotted but sank on Friday morning and Mr Madsen was rescued.

According to a statement Wall's family shared with CPJ today, the 30-year-old Swedish-born journalist, who was based in NY and Beijing, was working on a story about inventor Peter Madsen when she went missing.

He is now being held on preliminary manslaughter charges with a judge set to rule on Saturday whether he must remain in detention while investigations are carried out.

Madsen's defense lawyer, Bettina Hald Engmark, said her client maintains he is innocent.

Ms Hald Engmark said Madsen is "willing to cooperate" and has not decided whether to appeal the detention ruling.

Miss Wall's family said: "It is with great dismay that we received the news that Kim went missing during an assignment in Denmark".

She also received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in NY in 2013.

Madsen, 46, was charged with the manslaughter of Kim Wall on the same day he was rescued from the sea by the Danish navy.

Madsen "told us he had technical problems" to explain why the submarine had failed to respond to radio contact, Mr Damgaard said. Owner Peter Madsen, who built the vessel that was launched in 2008, is believed to be on board along with a reporter.

Isbak says the inventor "then climbed down inside the submarine and there was then some kind of air flow coming up and the submarine started to sink".

Copenhagen police said they've located the sunken submarine, but it will have to be airlifted to land before they can enter.

Isbak says he then saw Madsen swim over to another private boat.

It also reported that police were looking to determine if Madsen had sunk the submarine deliberately.

Madsen said "a minor problem with a ballast tank turned into a major issue" that ultimately caused the submarine to sink.

However, Swedish police said later on Friday they were investigating the whereabouts of a missing woman who had been on the submarine at some point.

Peter Madsen was arrested Friday on preliminary manslaughter charges after his 40-ton, almost 18-meter-long (60-foot-long) UC3 Nautilus sank.

However, when she failed to return home later that day, her anxious boyfriend contacted the authorities, which led to a full-scale search for the submarine in the early hours.

The navy initially said the sub was "found sailing" south of Copenhagen.

According to a timeline compiled by police, on Thursday at about 7 p.m. local time (1700 UTC), the sub departed Refshale Island, a former industrial shipyard transformed into a creative hub, for what was supposed to be a short trip.
