Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says he wants to know whether deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana's police bodyguards were with him during the assault he's admitted to at a Johannesburg nightclub.

Manana is accused of hitting a woman and her friend at a restaurant in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Manana appeared briefly at the Randburg Magistrate's Court, where he spent most of the morning and afternoon waiting as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) prepared his docket. And if that's the case, what about police action with regards to the tens of thousands of other women beaten, assaulted, raped and murdered in South Africa? "I agree", said the police minister.

"The deputy minister is a known individual; he can not hide from the law. Deputy Minister Manana will not be treated with special kid gloves".

Amandla.mobi campaigner Nqaba Mpofu said the petition called for Manana's dismissal and not necessarily for his arrest because they believed it was imminent. "He is not a flight risk and as police, we do not mete out punishments, but secure suspects for court processes". "Nonetheless, everybody is presumed innocent until proven otherwise".

Mbalula said he would need to get answers on Manana's VIP protection, as they essentially reported to him as police minister.

When asked why Manana was still in his position, Mbablula said it was up to President Jacob Zuma to dismiss or suspend Manana.

"Your state fully supports the victim and acts only on behalf of the victim", said Mbalula.

He reportedly told her brother he did this because she said he was gay.

Legal expert, Ulrich Roux also says the public expects Manana to be treated like everyone else.

Despite the confirmation of another assault charge laid against the deputy minister last month, resulting from an alleged altercation involving at least two women at another nightclub in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, the NPA said there were no grounds to keep him in custody.
