Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill stretches with teammates during NFL football training camp in Davie Fla. A person familiar with the decision says Tannehill will have surgery to repair the torn ACL

The Dolphins lured quarterback Jay Cutler out of retirement and signed him to a reported one-year, $10 million deal Monday.

The Miami Dolphins were dealt a devastating blow to their chances of making the National Football League playoffs for a second straight season last week with quarterback Ryan Tannehill going down with a non-contact knee injury.

An MRI turned up negative after practice, but Tannehill did suffer an ACL & MCL injuries last season on the same knee. Tannehill will be placed on injured reserve, the person said.

Cutler will be the starter while Matt Moore retains backup duties. The former Steer elected not to have surgery over the offseason. He's expected to be ready for the start of training camp next season.

The 29-year-old quarterback was reportedly at the team's preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons, though he was not on the sidelines.

According to Schefter, if Tannehill decided against surgery, he would have had to rest for six to eight weeks before attempting to play on his knee once again.

Technically the Dolphins could let Tannehill go with a cap hit of only $4.6 million before next season.

This is the first major surgery for Tannehill's, and it comes at a time when it seemed he was poised to have the best season of his career.

Tannehill has thrown 24-plus touchdowns in three of his five seasons and threw 19 in 13 games last season.
