School Bus Driver Evacuates Students to Safety After Bus Fire

There are just over 16,000 school buses on the road in IN, and according to the yearly statistics, as the number of school buses on the road has increased, so has the number of school bus stop arm violations. During the annual School Bus Stop Arm Survey earlier this year, 3,659 bus drivers across the state reported 703 stop arm violations in just one day.

According to state transportation officials, an average of seven school-age passengers are killed in school bus crashes each year.

Tillman said some drivers are unsure about whether they should stop on a four-lane roadway. "We try to locate the vehicle based off of the school bus driver's description".

Tillman cautioned drivers to be especially observant in school zones before school starts and when they are letting out and to be on the lookout for buses, cars and pedestrians. School buses remain the safest means of transportation for our precious cargo, but we need every motorist to do their part and keep a watchful eye for children and to stop for school buses when required by law.

For many kids, their school day begins and ends with a ride on a school bus.

Altering a route or schedule to avoid a bus is one way motorists can help improve safety. Troopers said they found 70 violations including holes in exhaust systems, a leaking oil tank, tire sidewall damage, a stop sign mechanical arm not extending, faded light lens covers, holes in seats, and lights not working properly. Vehicles coming from the opposite side are not required to stop.

MOTORISTS: In Minnesota, motorists must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights or a stop arm when approaching from the rear and from the opposite direction on undivided roads. Sometimes a child who is lagging behind comes running up to the bus after others have climbed aboard.

Students are instructed to wait until their bus driver signals for them to cross the road as a precaution against oncoming traffic.
