State environmental officials did not find West Nile virus or eastern equine encephalitis in the latest round of mosquito tests in Rhode Island.

The Dickinson County Public Health Director says the mosquitoes infected with West Nile are most active in the evening.

"Bayfield County residents should be aware of West Nile virus and take some simple steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites", Wartman said.

The season's first positive specimen of West Nile virus in Grand Rapids was discovered on the city's South East side on Tuesday, Aug. 8. "The West Nile virus seems to be here to stay in Wisconsin, so the best way to avoid becoming ill with West Nile virus is to reduce exposure to mosquitoes as well as eliminate breeding grounds for them".

One human case was reported. So far this year, 19 cases of West Nile have been reported in Louisiana. While most people infected with the virus show no symptoms, some may have high fever, severe headache, tiredness and/or a stiff neck that can last several days to several weeks. Most of the people who get the fatal illness are elderly.

Four other traps in the testing surveillance project are created to attract Aedes Egypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes - two species known to carry Zika virus.
