Forecasters: Perfect weather expected for viewing eclipse

Eclipse Weather

Eclipse Weather

The early eclipse weather forecast looks best in the West and least in the East, with patchy clouds muddling up the picture in between. What happens if it's cloudy? We wish that it could be clear across the entire USA for this awesome event, but unfortunately there will be clouds in many places, including along the path of totality.

The big question for eclipse day is, "Will it be cloudy or clear?"

The European model shows clouds over the area from Greenville south, with heavier cloud cover in the morning and partially sunny skies by total eclipse time.

But if it's cloudy and you've traveled for the total solar eclipse, prepare for disappointment.

One private meteorologist and eclipse-chaser fears heartbreaking weather in Wyoming where clouds could hide the eclipse with tantalizing clear skies just off in the distance. You won't see the sun eclipsed, or the sun's corona.

Angela Speck, director of astronomy and a professor of astrophysics at the University of Missouri, said at a conference recently: 'On a normal day, your pets don't try to look at the sun, and therefore don't damage their eyes. Other historically clear locations include Lincoln, Nebraska, and Carbondale, Illinois'.

NASA created the map below, which shows how, on average, the best chance of clear skies August 21 focuses in western areas, and the chance of cloud cover increases as you head east.

Remember, the exact weather will depend on your specific location, as the path of totality is about 70 miles wide and runs from OR to SC, and the rest of the country will experience at least a partial eclipse.

The forecast gets more and more accurate as the date draws closer.

By Sunday afternoon, Lipson said, the weather service will have a better sense of what to expect Monday. Partly sunny, with a high near 84.

Still, scientists and amateur astronomers have been using NASA data to plan their eclipse trips for years.

On the positive side, the National Weather Service says the signs are looking very good for clear skies when the eclipse passes over OR and Idaho as well as when it passes over the OH and Tennessee valleys.
