The victim had lost the legal battle after the top court refused to allow termination of her 32-week-old pregnancy, relying on a medical report that it would not be good for her or the foetus.

The baby was delivered by C-section at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Chandigarh this morning (August 17), according to The Times of India. "The baby weighed 2.2 kg (4.8 pounds) and is in the neonatal ICU for now". "The girl is stable and will be kept in a separate room". In this particular case, it was the girl's uncle, who had allegedly raped her over a period of six to seven months.

Her pregnancy was discovered in mid-July when she complained of stomach ache and her parents took her to hospital.

Sources said that the girl was unaware that she delivered a child.

However, it was only after she revealed to the superintendent of the shelter home that the pregnancy was the outcome of rape, she made attempts to have it terminated at the hospital on March 14. "Her pelvic bones are not strong enough to push the baby and she doesn't have the stamina to bear labour pain", a doctor told Hindustan Times. The case was then referred to the Supreme Court, however it also agreed with the lower court. Her parents told her that she needed surgery for a kidney stone problem, and refused to allow medical professionals to tell their child the truth, according to Harish.

Indian law does not permit medical terminations after 20 weeks unless there is a threat to the mother's life.

The case reached the Supreme Court, where it was ultimately rejected.

India has a track record of assaults and rapes of young women.

A child under 16 is raped every 155 minutes in India, according to Unicef statistics.
