Smith, 17, caught Wilshere after the Gunners man had played the ball and Wilshere then shoved his opponent to the floor before clashing with another City player Tyreke Wilson.

Wilshere has not started a league game for Arsenal since the 2015-16 campaign.

City scored twice within 10 minutes of the red card, but Arsenal held on for a 4-3 victory.

He said: "Well, that was eventful felt good to be back on the pitch at the Emirates even though it ended earlier than I thought".

Although Wilshere will have to serve a three-match ban, Football Association rules state it will be served in non-first team games.

He also cheekily responded to a Sun writer who claimed that his Arsenal career had reached a new low following the City brawl. "Look forward to it", Wilshere wrote on Twitter.

Having made his breaking through when aged just 16, Wilshere remains Arsenal's youngest player to have represented the club in the league, FA Cup and Europe, but appears to have fallen down the midfield pecking order behind the likes of Francis Coquelin and Granit Xhaka.

"At the moment, yes".

The 25-year-old, who has seen his once promising career marred by continuous injury problems, was playing for the Gunners' u23 team as he recovers from the fibula injury which brought a premature end to his loan spell with Bournemouth, last season.

"He has to work hard to come back and fight for a place in the team, but once he is ready, when he comes back, he will not be far from training with the team".
