James Mattis: Military solution in place to address North Korea threat

President Donald Trump stunned the world with his"fire and fury warning to North Korea over its weapons programs and threats to the United StatesMore

Matthew Rycroft told reporters at United Nations headquarters in NY that the USA and UK have been very clear in demanding a halt to North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

If carried out, it would be the North's most provocative missile launch to date.

Mattis has called the possibility of war with North Korea "catastrophic" in the past, on CBS News' "Face the Nation".

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that the North Korean regime should cease any consideration of actions that would "lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people".

A "grossly overmatched" North Korea "would lose" any conflict it starts, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim "Mad Dog" Mattis warned on August 9.

President Donald Trump "was informed of the growing threat last December and on taking office his first orders to me emphasized the readiness of our ballistic missile defense and nuclear deterrent forces", Mattis said.

Britain's UN ambassador said the United Kingdom "stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States" in tackling the nuclear threat from North Korea and making sure it can not pursue its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

Earlier this week, Gen. Kim Rak-Gyom, who heads North Korea's rocket command, said in a statement carried by state media that Pyongyang was "about to take" military action near the USA territory of Guam.

But asked whether the United States was ready if North Korea did commit a hostile act, he responded: 'We are ready'.

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson transits the South China Sea while conducting flight operations on April 9, 2017.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert will hold the briefing. He said the US nuclear arsenal is the most powerful it's ever been under his leadership.

The president's public comments "undermine anyone in Pyongyang who's interested in seeing if there's something to be gained in a dialogue with the United States", he said.

An attack would require more military assets than the US now has stationed in the Korean peninsula and east Asia.

"I was not elected, the American people elected the president", he said.
