Kaspersky drops anti-trust complaint - here's what Microsoft did to appease them

At the time, Kaspersky accused Microsoft of removing its software from users' PCs when they upgraded to Windows 10, turning to Windows Defender in its place.

In response to the Kaspersky antitrust complaint, Microsoft will be making major changes to Windows 10 in the Fall Creators Update. It claimed the company was using its dominant position with Windows "to fiercely promote its own - inferior - security software at the expense of users' previously self-chosen security solution".

Mochola said Kaspersky Lab has a "long history of cooperation" with Microsoft and that the promised changes will make the cyber security market healthier, resulting in better protection for all users.

The dispute between Microsoft and Kaspersky Lab had been raging for over six months now. The crux of Kaspersky's complaint is the way Microsoft was forcing its own Windows Defender AV software on Windows 10 users - Windows Defender is built into the very fabric of Windows 10 - while disabling existing third-party AV software that doesn't yet fit Microsoft's compatibility criteria.

"Such promotion is conducted using questionable methods, and we want to bring these methods to the attention of the anti-competition authorities, ".

All changes will be applied to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and Mochola said that his company is so elated that it's withdrawing its official complaint against Microsoft.

Since Microsoft has agreed to make changes to Windows 10 that will help third-party antivirus makers prepare their products for significant Windows updates and ensure compatibility, Kaspersky is its ceasing legal action against the company. Microsoft's Rob Lefferts, a partner director of the Windows Enterprise and Security unit, made the admission in a blog post on the matter. It also said it will work with antivirus vendors to help them with compatibility reviews in advance of each updated feature becoming available to customers. This includes increasing the amount of time AV partners will have to review final builds before the next Windows 10 feature update is rolled out to customers, which should address the same issue.

In a blog post Wednesday, the Redmond, Wash., software behemoth said it is making changes to its approach to antivirus software including enabling third-party developers to alert customers before and after a subscription expires and giving them a better window into when it will release updates.

Microsoft has modified how Windows will inform users when their antivirus application has expired and is no longer protecting them.

"We look forward to our continued partnership with the industry", Lefferts wrote.

"We appreciate the feedback and continued dialogue with our partners and are pleased to have found common ground with Kaspersky Lab on the complaints raised in Russian Federation and Europe", Rob Lefferts, partner director, Windows Enterprise, and Security, said in the blog post.
