Killed After Car Hits Crowd Protesting White Nationalist Rally

White nationalists, including the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis movement leaders, were clashing with counter-protesters at the rally hours before the collision in downtown Charlottesville. While a group of counter-protesters were walking through the streets, a silver Dodge Challenger charged through the crowd, smashed into another vehicle, backed up and then barreled back out of the street.

The driver suspected of plowing his auto into counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday is in police custody.

Earlier in the day, Charlottesville police said James Alex Fields Jr., 20, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses over the ramming attack perpetrated amid the violence, Sputnik reported.

One woman was killed and at least 19 were injured Saturday when a auto crashed into a crowd of peaceful protesters leaving a "Unite the Right" rally that officials declared an "unlawful assembly".

Trump has been criticised for his response to the riot.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides", Trump said during a short statement, adding that he had been closely following awful events unfolding in Virginia.

Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press", Signer said the views of these "anti-Semites, racists, Aryans, Nazis", and KKK members previously had been kept "in the shadows".

Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas said that at least 35 people were injured and treated by city personnel. Among the deaths, two police officers watching over the protests died in a helicopter crash. "It has no place in America".

Friday night white nationalist organizations from around to the country descended onto Virginia to protest the ordered removal of former confederate general Robert E. Lee's statue from Virginia State Grounds. Let us heal. This is not our story.

The federal government has opened a civil rights investigation into the horrific crash.

For his part, US President Donald Trump tweeted: "We all must be united and condemn all that hate stands for". It's white supremacist terrorism.

Trump is taking heat for what he didn't say in his remarks on the Charlottesville violence.
