If you've applied for a university then you'll probably already be familiar with the UCAS website.

This year there has been a drop in applications to start degree courses at United Kingdom universities this autumn, fuelled by factors including a fall in the 18 and 19-year-old population, changes to funding for nursing degrees and the possible impact of Brexit.

After years of increasing the number of applications from prospective students, this year universities are facing a marked decline, meaning Clearing is not as daunting as you may fear.

Clearing is the annual process that matches students without places, for example those that did not meet their required grades, with available courses. Once you have permission from a uni you want to go to, you can add the course in Track.

With A-level results day looming, students may be worrying about what to do should they have done worse - or better - than expected in their exams.

Among the 24 Russell Group institutions alone, those universities considered among the best in the country, including Leeds, York and Sheffield, two-thirds had at least one course listed on the Ucas site, with 4,820 courses potentially having places on offer.

Students who miss out on their top university choice come Thursday will now have the chance to choose from more than 300 courses at the University of Sheffield.

It is important to note that information on Adjustment is not as widespread as it is with Clearing.

A breakdown shows a 4 per cent decrease in United Kingdom applicants, while the number of European Union students planning to study at a United Kingdom university or college has fallen by five per cent.

Students completing two year BTEC National programmes have achieved outstanding results.

You then need to give them your Clearing number and your UCAS Personal ID number, so they can look at your application form and A-level results.

Under funding reforms, bursaries for nursing students have been scrapped and replaced by loans. If you didn't get the grades for university, you can try your luck with clearing, re-sit some exams, or simply try another route to your chosen career - vocational courses, apprenticeships, or something else entirely.

"I would encourage anyone with a query or concern about their CCEA examination results to pick up the phone and give us a call".

"Medicine or Law might not be in clearing for some universities, but the majority of courses will have some clearing places".

- Students from outside the United Kingdom can use clearing too - last year, nearly 6,000 European Union and worldwide applicants got in through clearing.

You can also use websites like University Compare, or apps like Clearing, to make things a bit easier.

The Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) has set up a dedicated examinations helpline which offers advice and guidance for students who are expecting their A-Level and GCSE results over the next fortnight.

It's available July to September each year.
