The elections assume further significance for the BJP ahead of the State Assembly elections next year.

The Congress was victorious on all three seats in Mandsaur district, which was the epicentre was farmers protets in June. He expressed hope that the winds of change are blowing, and Congress will be able to unseat BJP in 2018 polls. As per the final tally, the opposition Congress-backed candidates won at 15 places, while Independent candidates tasted victory at three places.

The results, which were announced on Wednesday, have come as a shot in the arm for Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who has been facing criticism because of the farmer agitation in the State.

Of the 43 seats, bypolls were held at four, while the contest was necessitated on two seats after the sitting presidents were removed under the "right to recall". BJP has done well in traditional Congress bastions too.

When asked that BJP lost local body election in Shamsabad (Vidisha), which was once part of CM's constituency, he said as there election was to fill the vacant chair hence party did not pay much attention on it. The win is proving to be encouraging for the present government. "Best wishes to all the winning candidates and hard working workers of the BJP for the massive victory".

The Congress wrested from the BJP the posts of chairpersons of urban local bodies in Jhabua (Jhabua), Maheshwar (Khargone), Damua, Saunsar, Mohgaon (Chhindwara) and Baihar (Balaghat). "The public has trusted us and we will certainly meet their hopes", he tweeted.
