Magic Johnson at center of National Basketball Association probe into Paul George tampering

The NBA released a statement on Sunday saying that it was investigating alleged tampering violations by the Los Angeles Lakers in regard to Paul George. According to Fred Katz of the Norman Transcript, the Pacers have planned to file tampering charges well before they traded George to Oklahoma City.

As if the NBA's offseason wasn't deranged enough, the Los Angeles Lakers now have a new issue on their hands.

That likely won't deter any suitors, including the Lakers: George could still head for Los Angeles next summer when he is an unrestricted free agent. The investigation is being conducted by the law firm Wachtell, Liption, Rosen & Katz. He indicates the Lakers have been cooperative in the investigation and so far, "no findings have been made" to put the team at risk of punishment. "We have asked both teams to refrain from commenting while the investigation is ongoing", the league said.

If established that the Lakers tampered with George, they will lose draft picks or prohibited from signing him as a free agent.

Many conspiracy theorists around the area were already questioning the tampering after Magic Johnson tweeted, "God is so good!" the day George informed the Pacers he was going to leave town.

Team officials aren't allowed to make contact with players or their agents to discuss future plans unless it's after the opening of the players' free-agency year on July 1.

"With massive cap space, 4 draft picks, and free agency rapidly approaching, we sit in the best position in the National Basketball Association", read the Hawks' letter, sent via email.

There has been speculation for some time that George has wanted to join the Lakers.

When it comes to Johnson, many will mention his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he winked when asked about George.

The NBA has set a precedent that players can not tamper with other players.

According to Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers came so close to acquiring George, who was about to call Cleveland team owner Dan Gilbert on the phone but the Pacers backed out at the last minute. "I got a real welcoming, and this feels like home".
