Paxton's injury leaves an already decimated Mariner starting rotation, with even more question marks. A day later, Trout walked with one out, taking a close 3-2 pitch from James Pazos (3-4).

The Mariners did just drop the first two games of a crucial four game weekend series against the division rival Anaheim Angels, but they remain just a half game out of the wild card race. They finally have an offense to rely on, led by sluggers Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz, bolstered by the speed of young players like Ben Gamel and Guillermo Heredia, and propped up with some veteran presences like Kyle Seager, Danny Valencia, Jarrod Dyson, and new acquisition Yonder Alonso. The veteran right-hander will carry an unpalatable 5.09 ERA and 1.44 WHIP into a road showdown with the Mariners next time he takes to the mound. J.C. Ramirez gave up all three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four, not factoring in the decision. Yusmeiro Petit pitched the ninth for his second save. Keynan Middleton got the win to improve to 4-0 this season, while Cam Bedrosian turned out the lights in the 9th for his 5th save of the year.

"We've got to continue to play good baseball regardless of who we're playing against really", Simmons said.

North Battleford's Andrew Albers is going to be in a pennant chase. The 31-year-old is 12-3 with a 2.61 ERA pitching for Triple-A Gwinnett this season.

The Mariners' 6-3 loss Saturday to the Angels was disappointing for what it could have been - a capper to Martinez's wonderful jersey-retirement ceremony in front of a sellout crowd - and for what it was: The Mariners led 3-1 at the start of the seventh inning. Paxton joins fellow starters Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma on the DL.

Bruce, 30, has had a productive year for the Mets, batting.258/.324/.524 with 29 home runs and 75 RBI in 445 plate appearances.

After starter Erasmo Ramirez gave the Mariners six strong innings, Lawrence replaced him in the seventh inning.
