He made an eight.

"The PGA Championship I think is going to be the toughest for me".

Jon Rahm got to as low as 5-under par in his third round and was on the cusp of contention at 2-under for the tournament before giving it all back.

Day will forever regret his brain explosion after cutting the ears off his drive, and trying to play a miracle shot around the trees to get back in the frame.

Three bogeys in his first seven holes derailed that dream.

It was an extraordinary finish to an extraordinary day for the Australian, who plummeted to a tie for 16th. As he was wrapping up his round, he saw a leaderboard that showed Kevin Kisner and Hideki Matsuyama at 8 under for the tournament, and suddenly McIlroy's bid to end a three-year drought in the majors became that much more hard.

A shell-shocked Day, usually accomodating with the media, walked off hand-in-hand with wife Ellie without taking questions.

"It's hard because you can't leave it under the hole as the greens are firm", Thomas said.

In 2017, he's finished in the top 25 in six of his 18 events so far and came into the PGA Championship following the first PGA Tour win of his career, during the off-week Barracuda Championship.

Day was on a rollercoaster from the start of his third round, battling swing problems and continually hooking his tee balls.

As much as Kevin Kisner regretted his stumble down the stretch and the fact he allowed himself to be in what he called "a dogfight" today, he knew it could have been much, much worse.

Kevin Kisner (72) stayed ahead but only by a shot over Hideki Matsuyama (73), whose game seemed to have deserted him.

Another American, Justin Thomas, made a two-under 69 to tie for fourth alongside South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen who shot 71.

Kisner was disappointed not to make the most of his day, but he was upbeat.

"I haven't hit it this well this whole summer - a lot of average finishes", Kisner said. A double-bogey at the 12th leaves him five back. "It's unfortunate. He played pretty good coming in and then gave it all away, so it's tough".

The 24-year-old American has been attempting to become the youngest player to complete a Grand Slam of majors this week, but he was unable to mount a charge up the leaderboard as he remained at three over for the tournament. When he finished, none of the other early starters on Friday were within five shots of the lead.

For the second successive major the cut fell at five over par, with 75 players qualifying for the final two rounds.

Marc Leishman had an even-par 71 highlighted by an eagle at the par-five 10th hole.
