Justine Damond was killed after making a 911 call to report a possible rape.

"It felt like a privilege to love Justine, and I know those of you who love Justine probably feel that as well".

Damond added he had "immense gratitude for being the one she chose".

Damond, 40, was shot and killed by a Minneapolis police officer on July 15 after calling 911 to report a sexual assault in her neighborhood.

"We've lost the dearest of people and we're desperate for information", says Don Damond, the fiance of Justine Damond who was fatally shot by United States police.

Instead of traveling to Hawaii Friday evening for the ceremony, John Ruszczyk remembered his daughter, Justine Ruszczyk Damond, during a memorial service at Lake Harriet, the Star Tribune reported.

Fiance Don Damond is comforted by family and friends at the service.

Hundreds of people, many wearing heart-shaped stickers, attended the event.

"In Australia, they call it 'you're punching above your weight, ' alright?"

A banner above the band shell at Lake Harriet in southwest Minneapolis reads, "Move from fear and survival to fascination and creation".

A large photo of Ms Damond, who was engaged to be married to her American partner, was displayed alongside an Australian flag at the memorial on the shores of Lake Harriet.

Musician Johanna Morrow played the didgeridoo in what has been described as a "very Australian" tribute.

Investigation into the shooting continues.

The memorial will show the video of Justine helping ducklings stuck in a drain near her house in Minneapolis - retrieving them barefoot. "This information may more clearly define the actions of Officers Noor and Harrity both prior and post shooting".

'Justine, thankyou for your lovely light that still SHINES on us all, ' one thoughtful sign read.

Noor was in the passenger seat and shot Ms Damond through the open driver-side window. Harrity was interviewed by the agency but Noor declined and, under state law, can not be compelled to be interviewed.

Her family and friends have also set up a memorial fund for the social justice causes she believed in.
