With the starting price of Rs. 2.23 crore, the high-performance AMG GT R is a meaner and more official version of the Mercedes-AMG GT S. The German Brand alongside this ultra-premium sports coupe also has launched its drop-top younger kin, the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster for the Indian marketplace. This supercharged engine produces 585 ps of power and 700Nm of peak torque.

The Times of India quoted Roland Folger, MD of Mercedes in India, "Bringing in the fastest cars from our portfolio displays the increasing importance of India as a market and its potential for performance sports cars". Coupled to the engine is a 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission that transmits the power to the rear wheels only.

The GT Roadster, on the other hand, is not as hardcore as the GT R. The convertible model is powered by the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, though power and torque figures are down to 469hp and 630Nm state of tune.

Mercedes-AMG has continued its launching spree in the country.

The AMG GT R is underpinned by a heavily reworked double-wishbone suspension system developed from the GT3 racer. In contrast to the standard GT S, which is already presented in India, the Mercedes-AMG GT R is completely light-footed. The GT Roadster on the contrary only gets a mechanical locking differential while also missing out on the rear-wheel steering of the flagship GT-R.

One of the biggest changes that the Mercedes-AMG GT R will see is the change in the chassis. The vehicle has taken the CBU route to India and will be retailed out of the Mercedes-Benz's Performance Centres across the country.

Rear-wheel steering offers a better control over the vehicle, especially while attempting to corner at higher speeds.

The visual appeal of the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster lies in its fabric top, and it can be specced in three colour options - red, beige and black. Transmission is done by the same 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and power is also sent to the rear wheels only.

The Mercedes AMG GT R will give a tough competition to the Porsche 911 Turbo and Aston Martin's Vantage V12.
