Motorhead's 'Lemmy' has dino croc named after him

It comes after a study of a fossil skeleton housed at London's Natural History Museum, which was dug up from a clay pit near Peterborough in 1909, by University of Edinburgh palaeontologist Michela Johnson. Given the opportunity to correct this century-old mistake, they renamed the extinct creature Lemmysuchus, meaning Lemmy's crocodile.

Named Lemmysuchus - a direct translation of 'Lemmy's crocodile, ' the 5.8 meter long beast was a sea-going member of a group of teleosaurs which were common during the Jurassic Period and is distantly related to today's crocs.

Before subsequent fossils were found to suggest that the Lemmysuchus was in fact it's own species, many of it's relatives fossils were often mixed in. With a long snout and thin sharp teeth its principle diet would have been fish, rather than the crunchier shelled prey of Lemmysuchus.

Having taken a better look at the creature recently, they realised it needed a new classification, and museum curator Lorna Steel let her love for Lemmy dictate the name, adding "we'd like to think that he would have raised a glass to Lemmysuchus".

It would appear to be quite an appropriate pairing, as the beast, now known as the Lemmysuchus, could grow to almost six metres long and used its large teeth to chomp up turtles.

It has now been named Lemmysuchus, which translates as "Lemmy's crocodile".

In addition to his rock "n" roll lifestyle, Kilmister was known for helping define the heavy metal genre through out his storied career.

Lemmy, a chain-smoker who boasted of drinking a bottle of whiskey a day and of sleeping with more than 1,000 women, died in December 2015 at the age of 70 in Los Angeles.
