Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed talks are underway to re-sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the latter half of this season.

"He is injured and he needs time to recover", said Mourinho, as reported by the Telegraph.

"We have [bought] three players, as you know".

Ibrahimovic -- who had won league titles with every club he had played for before joining United on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain a year ago - has made clear that he was disappointed to finish sixth with Mourinho's team last season.

"He thinks he can do more at football's highest level so we are having conversations and discussing the possibility of him staying for the second part of the season".

"The Premier League is what you all know", he told a news conference ahead of United's opening match against West Ham on Sunday.

United have invested heavily on the signings of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof in the transfer window, while champions Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal have also spent large sums.

Matic adds aggression and discipline to United's midfield and he will fit right into Mourinho's preferred three-man midfield and should be a regular figure in the starting XI alongside Ander Herrera and Pogba.

"There are obviously bigger competitions than others, but we will certainly be fighting on all fronts to win as much as we can".

His first season at United was a year of building - and now he is ready to get to the top again.

"When this season I got a call that Matic wants to play for me, he wants to come to Manchester United and he can make it happen, I thought he was the ideal player for me. I really like his method of training, his motivation and his passion". I understand by doing 75 percent of what I asked, the club did very well. "I'm happy with the effort the club did and I'm happy they managed to do 75 percent of the work before the Premier League starts". I'm not in a position of crying, of moaning, protesting. And I always had respect and the desire to do well in the English cups and I always liked to go to the finals. I want to play West Ham - a hard match - then go to Swansea for another hard match.

"We were focused on the striker getting goals and when it didn't happen we were in trouble". "They can still be like new players for us later in the season, so we are fine".

Mourinho says he is after another player "coming from the sides" to complete his summer business - leaving the door open for either a winger or a full-back.

"If we cannot strengthen the team in these areas we have players that we can trust".
