Neuromancer movie gets greenlight with Deadpool's Tim Miller behind it

Deadpool helmer Tim Miller has signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel Neuromancer for 20th Century Fox, according to Deadline. Cyperpunk is in vogue at the moment, as evidenced by the release of Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner 2049, both of which feature neon-soaked dark metropolitan cities that are brimming with uniquely shady criminals. He's left with a damaged nervous system that prevents him from connecting to "the matrix", a worldwide virtual reality network (which is basically the internet before there was an internet).

Much like the novel, the Neuromancer film is likely to follow Henry Dorsett Case, a former hacker who had been stripped of his ability to plug into cyberspace. It was also the first novel to win the Nebula, Philip K. Dick, and the Hugo Awards in the same year. Due to its significance, studios have flirted with transferring the story to the big screen numerous times over the years, with talk of production stretching all the way back to 2007. Simon Kinberg, who worked as a producer on Deadpool, will reportedly continue that role with this new Miller project.

Miller and Kinberg seems like an ideal pairing to take on the film.

Miller is now busy on a new instalment in the Terminator franchise, with James Cameron serving in an advisory capacity, after dropping out of Deadpool 2 due to creative differences with star Ryan Reynolds. Neuromancer is a famously gritty cyberpunk thriller, and Miller's direction with Deadpool shows that he's certainly capable of delivering the sort of stylistic take Gibson's world deserves.

Coming from a background in visual effects, Tim Miller's strength has always been big, eye-catching spectacles that make the audience sit up and pay attention.
